About

This is the journey of Bruno the VW Camper Bus.

It was manufactured in Westphalia, Germany in January 1970, and purchased by Daniel C. Stanley of Pearl River, NY on February 28th, 1970 in Spring Valley, New York.

Dan and family spent the next 15 years using, and vacationing in the bus. This is evidenced by the mileage log kept in a green Mead memo notebook, and the 70's Mad magazines and other mementos found lost under the bench seat. At some point the family moved to Saint Albans, ME. The last gas fill-ups logged were in late 1985 (September 9th, mileage - 62,263, mpg 20.3).

After that, it seems that the Montana Red bus was forgotten in a Maine barn for more then 20 years...

Then in 2006, after Mr. Stanley could no longer use the classic VW, it was sold to the Moulton family in Wells, ME for primary use by their 17 year old daughter. After some tinkering, a quick repaint job and a little driving, it was for sale again when she decided to go into the Peace Corp.

In August 2007, I saw the beautiful bus sitting on the side of the road for sale. I gave it a good look, took the number, and went home. At first, I didn't tell my wife, but a few weeks later I brought it up. She agreed that we should give them a call and see if it was still available. To our surprise, IT WAS! On September 7th 2007, I purchased Bruno for $3500, He had 67,777 original miles.
